Yes, my Tuxedo Boy is 8 years old today! He was born quite unexpectedly–and about a month early–on Halloween evening, and we have always called him our Trick and Treat (and sometimes our little Halloweenie).
One fun thing about having a Halloween birthday is that there’s a class party on your special day, so we can really let ourselves [...]

In Dreams . . .

So I’m sure your dreams are rich, exciting, and filled with psycho-analytic glamour. Mine, as it happens, are filled with craft projects. Last night, for example, I conjured up this fabric yo yo embellishment for one of Little Sunshine’s tee shirts. Luckily, Baggy had a charm pack of fabric from our local quilt shop which [...]

Give yourself a thrilling new identity: here
I know, I know, I’m a Paleo-Fabian . . . but the revolution will come, whether I have a pretend title or not, won’t it? So, what the heck.
Comrade Baltimore Cake

This cake has been on my mind since I started browsing cookbooks for my ill-fated entry in the Retro Recipe Challenge–the Lord Baltimore Cake.
Some history: in 1906, Lady Baltimore cake makes an appearance in Owen Wister’s book, Lady Baltimore, as a substitute for a more traditional wedding cake. It appears to have been a version [...]
Airbags Deployed

So this is what the front end of our old white car looks like now. Thank goodness, no one was hurt–although the airbag left Joan pretty sore. We seem to be having a string of accidents–here’s hoping that whatever ill star is currently frowning on us will soon pass.
Cupcake Party!

Our friend Lois is celebrating her 75th birthday tomorrow night with a party to which we are all invited. What else could I bring to the festivities but 75 cupcakes?
Three kinds: Texas Cupcakes (tiny little Texas Sheetcakes, with the signature pecan fudge topping); Buttermilk Spice Cake with Maple Cream Frosting, and the perennial Pink Lemonade–but updated with a [...]
Pictures from Around the Place

We get about 9 beautiful fall days here on the Palouse–sprinkled amid about six weeks of chilly, rainy, muddy hell. Today was one of those days–not warm, but bright and lovely. I wandered around the place this afternoon taking pictures, so you can enjoy it with me.
This is my sister Hoe’s horse barn–freshly painted by [...]
Our Mushroom

It’s the time of year when our avocado tree sheds its leaves, and I pile them up in the pot in a doubtless misguided attempt to create humus in the pot and fool our tree into thinking that it lives in an avocado grove, ranging free and untrammelled. What really happens is that a fine [...]
A Much Better Use for Saltines
Posted in food, gourmandise, recipes on October 23, 2007 | 2 Comments »
I’ve felt bad about the way I abused saltines, back in the Retro Recipe Challenge. Poor things, they have a hard enough row to hoe just being themselves. They’re the first food people turn to after a bad case of flu, for example. They get wrapped up in manky little cellophane packets and crushed into [...]
Dumbledore is . . . Jody Foster? What?

Seriously, I’m regretting this post already. Here’s the thing, for those of you who’ve been in cryostorage over the last few days–at a recent fan event, Jo Rowling dropped what has to be the flabbiest bombshell of all time: she liked the Smiths when she was young, and Dumbledore was gay.
Gay, I might add, in the best possible [...]
