Chilly Musings

I’ve been surprised to discover this winter that I’m a demon with a snowshovel.  That’s right.  I keep the sidewalks clear around here, and I do it with a certain innate talent.  I’m not a superhero, like  William Macy.   But I’m good.  I’m consistent.  And I get the job done.
Until I look at the neighbors’ [...]

Yes, It IS Snowing . . .

My chicken is wearing a shawl of snow these days.  It has snowed quite a bit, and it keeps on snowing–as much as 4 inches today, in fact.  I’m thrilled, of course, because I love snow, love the cold, love storms (as long as the power doesn’t go out), love winter.  The kids and I [...]

Time Keeps on Slipping

We had our first snow last Sunday night.  This landmark in the calendar is always an ecstatic one–but this year is particularly nice, because the snow started in the evening, so I could sit in my chair by the window with the porch light on and watch the flakes drift out of the dark winter sky into [...]

Clouds

I love clouds–much to my family’s chagrin.  I never get tired of watching the sky, although the kids get tired of hearing me do my amateurish best to identify clouds, constellations, and celestial events.  And this afternoon, thanks to Little Sunshine, I got to watch a fall storm move across the back garden so fast [...]

Heifer Project Cookies

Every winter, the kids and I help out with our local ecumenical group to raise funds for the Heifer Project.  This year we made cookies to sell at the Winter Market.  My junior high English teacher, Miss Pete, works the table, which means that we just had to make the cookies and drop them off (thanks, [...]

Pictures from Around the Place

We get about 9 beautiful fall days here on the Palouse–sprinkled amid about six weeks of chilly, rainy, muddy hell.  Today was one of those days–not warm, but bright and lovely.  I wandered around the place this afternoon taking pictures, so you can enjoy it with me.

This is my sister Hoe’s horse barn–freshly painted by [...]

Idler’s Rest

We went to Idler’s Rest last weekend, much to the kids’ delight.  If you live around the Palouse, you know that Idler’s Rest is one of the gems of Latah County–a magnificent cedar grove, lightly and lovingly maintained by the Palouse Land Trust  to the benefit of everyone who has ever needed a quick, easy get away from [...]

Before the Storm

Tuxedo Boy and I went out on the afternoon of the 31st to get some pictures of harvest for you all.  We ended up capturing some excellent shots of gathering storm clouds, which soon turned into a spectacular summer thunderstorm.

Here’s a classic cumulonimbus:

You can see that the wheat harvest is over, which means that we’re headed toward fall.  [...]

My Back Yard

I know this is a giant picture, but I wanted you to see how beautiful it is here at harvest time.  Summer is drawing in . . . university classes started today, and the kids are back to school next week.  The weather has turned chilly and damp, although it’s bound to heat up again [...]

Bag Madness

Yet another bag; Little Sunshine is bemused by this outpouring of baggery.  I also made, but failed to photograph, a fully reversible furoshiki style lunchbag for niece Supergirl, who moves out of her parents’ home and into her college dorm room tomorrow.  Tomorrow!  Poor Hoe and husband Handy Andy have that whipped dog look that goes with [...]
