Heifer Project Cookies

November 10, 2007

Every winter, the kids and I help out with our local ecumenical group to raise funds for the Heifer Project.  This year we made cookies to sell at the Winter Market.  My junior high English teacher, Miss Pete, works the table, which means that we just had to make the cookies and drop them off (thanks, Miss Pete!) on our way to a lot of other adventures.

We chose only animals that are used in the Heifer Project:  water buffalo, camels, geese, ducks, chickens, rabbits, honey bees, sheep, llamas, and pigs.

It was so much fun to decorate these–mixing up all the different colors of frosting, doing the outlining, and then flooding them . . . it’s as close as I’ll ever come to being an artist.  I can’t resist a few more close ups . . . bear with me.

The Heifer Project is my favorite Christmas gift for grown ups. I’ll never forget the year my daughter, Molly, gave a flock of chickens in my name to the Heifer Project. On the gift card there was a beautiful little African boy holding a baby chick in his hand with a huge smile on his face. He could have been a twin to my son Ben. What a wonderful way for those of us with way to much to reach out and help those of us with far to little.

We loved your Heifer “menagerie”. Where did you get your cookie cutters? We would like to bake and give as a token gift some gingerbread cookies in the shape of the water buffalo and llamas that we are giving this year as Christmas gifts. We looked all over the Internet, to no avail.

These cutters came in a giant bucket of 100 animal cookie cutters from Michael’s, the craft store, a couple of years ago. They’ve been terrific!
